Re: Hello, was tomatoes and frost

All right, Allan, I'll take the bait. Spent Saturday and today chipping
blackberry vines and turning the compost for the first time this
season. (The two events are related as the blackberry vines are used to
heat the pile.) I'm about 4 weeks late as I usually try to turn once in
late November.

I'll grind up 80 gallons or so of vines ever three weeks and re-turn the
pile until mid-March. By early May I should have a couple of yards of
black gold for my tomatoes and curcurbits. I also use the compost as a
mulch for tomatoes and peppers to reduce the blight.

It was quite cold (for here, near Seattle) the week before Christmas.
Got down to 10 degrees F (-12 C) for a couple of days but now the highs
are back in the 40's (5 to 8 C) where the should be this time of year.
And, oh, the rain!! Over an inch (2.5 cm) yesterday alone and nearly as
much on Christmas Day.
