RE: Vegetable Seeds

I have had lettuce seeds for 5 years now, and am planning on using them this year.  Last year, the germination rate was nearly 100%. I store all my seeds in the refrigerator.  I've read that the best way to store them is a airtight container with silica gel to minimize moisture; but I just store them in a cardboard container...

I usually have seeds left over after sowing, especially lettuce seeds.  How long will the seeds remain in a usable condition and what is the best way to store them?  I usually store them in a sealed envelope indoors.
