Dear Group,
Stored dry and cool in paper envelopes, seed can last for years. Beans
about 5 years, tomatoes up to 10 years, alliums 2-3 years, brassica 4 years.
I have had good germination from 9 year old onion seeds, but would expect
most alliums not to be viable after such a long time.
The only critical vegetable is parsnip which must be grown from fresh seed
every year. In the second year germination is very erratic and poor.
If you bought a seed packet that has been in full sunlight in the shop, or
worse, on a display rack outside, then germination and viability may be
seriously reduced even in the first year.
Regards
Petra
