Broc. sideshoots-was: Spring in the Pac NW

Don't know the whole answer to this but I do know that some of the
large-heading hybrids are not as productive of sideshoots as some older
heirloom varieties that bear smaller heads. De Cicco is an Italian
heirloom variety which is very tasty and makes abundant sideshoots tho you
might be disappointed if you grow it for the initial head. But the
sideshoots just keep coming. Johnny's Seeds carries it and I don't know
who else.

Another thought--if you like those sideshoots--try growing some broccoli
raab this spring--you can direct seed it , it's very fast growing (compared
to broccoli), is not quite as *meaty* as a broccoli spear, but is great in
a stir fry.
