fresh manure in desert gardening?

Hi Folks--

Got this post on the Bulletin board of my Vegetable Gardens web site. I
have no experience in high desert gardening so I'm wondering if there's any
one with comparable experience or with good advice:

He wanted to add about 12" of fresh steer manure to his veg garden this
year and I thought that might be too hot too soon.... I'd let it age a
year and find other ways to increase soil fertility. What do you think?

(If you'd like you can post directly on the Bulletin Board, at

TIA,
