Hi Sheila.... Several people have also expressed interest in the straw bale
method so I'm posting complete details to the group.
The plants grow in the bales... I built a wooden box for mine so I could
place a layer (5ins) of potting mix on top of the bail to initially plant
in. This was really an overkill - next time I will cut the bottoms out of a
couple of medium sized pots and sit them straight on top of the bales. As
for placing the bales underground - I did not do this, mainly because I
hate digging holes, but also because I did not want to risk having cold
ground water seeping through the bale.
