Re: Stan's hot tomato

I forgot where I left off so here goes. I thought that only the bulb
that was left out of the ground had broken. Wrong. Eight of the 25
bulbs had cracked in exactly the same manner. No problem, this is an
experiment after all. I pulled the entire string out of the ground and
laid them on the surface. Next I took 10, 2 liter plastic bottles filled
with water, with their caps on loose, and put each one directly on top of
10 of the good bulbs. I took an 11th bottle full of water and placed it
about 5 feet away from the string of bulbs as a control. I wanted to see
if the unheated bottle would freeze overnight and what the heated ones
would do.
What a sight that night. I fully expected agents Skully and Moulder
would show up at my door. The garden looked liked a landing sight for
UFO's. The neighbors must really think that I am nuts now.
     This is fun. And festive.
I didn't lay out a new string of unglued lights like I said I was
going to do.
Anyway, the unheated bottle froze solid. The heated bottles froze
about halfway. I really expected them to not freeze at all. None of the
bulbs broke. I still believe that the little Christmas tree bulbs put
out enough heat for my purpose (try touching one), but I am just not
utilizing it properly. I have, of course, devised a new setup. As long
as these different plans cost next to nothing, I will keep trying until I
get it right. I am going to try to concentrate on getting a six bottle
group up to about 50 or 60 degrees F. overnight. Heating the ground will
have to come later. Perhaps when I get the heat right above ground, the
below ground will take care of itself.
     Well, I'm off again.

Stan. The cheap and lazy gardener.
