Re: Deer!! Help Needed!

The only thing that has worked for my garden has been
a 7 ft. electric fence completely around the garden. Anything, outside
of the fence gets eaten by Whitetail Deer. I have been trying to
grow seedling trees around the property for years but they just
didn't seem to grow very fast. It took me years to realize that
the deer love the tender new growth each year! I bought
a spray bottle of "Repel" and sprayed everything that
the deer could reach with it last Spring. Amazing results!
The little trees and shrubs doubled in size last summer.
I reapplied whenever I felt worried. (not very scientific, but
very satisfying). This spray says it cannot be used on
human edible veggies. The deer still go up to the seedlings
and lower tree branches in the spring and maybe taste it
a little, but I have not seen any damage at all.
The name of this stuff is REPELL it says it is a "repellent
for deer, squirrels, dogs, cats and other chewing , gnawing, nibbling
animals."  For those of you who know about such things;
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS
Benzyldiethrl [(2,6 xylyl carbamoyl) Methyl] Ammonium Saccharide .065%

Thymol...................................................................
.................................. .035%
  Inert
Ingredients..............................................................
............... 99.90%

It is manufactured for: Security Products Company
                                          A Division of Farnam Companies
Inc.
301 E. Osborn Rd. Phoenix AZ

If I remember right it was a bit pricey at about $12.00 US for 1 Quart,
but I will definitely buy it again as necessary.

The current electric fence is actually my second fence. The first
one I made the mistake of putting the wires too far apart. The
deer learned how to jump through the wires, and of course, since
they were airborne when they touched the wires, they wouldn't
get shocked. Also, the rabbits learned the same trick about
jumping over the single low wire I put up to discourage them.
Now I have three low wires, about three inches apart, just above
the ground and another wire every 12 inches. Last year
this system worked perfectly. The deer just walk by my
garden and ignore it.
