There are Vermiculite and Perlite, and maybe expanded polystyrene
granules but I have never used them on account of (a) expense (b) they
will never rot away so could become a nuisance (c) perlite is
exceedingly obvious when it gets around. Rockwool blocks are used
commercially. The commercial soilless composts based on peat or
organic material all tend to go smelly and unusable if left too long too
wet and airless so you need something which is (a) inert (b) free
draining.

I think you would do best to find and adopt a system that is proven and
well documented rather than branching out on your own.
