Hi, Brenda, welcome to the list. I think that it's just that right now
it's down time in most people's gardens. I would expect that when it's time
to plant seedlings, everybody will get going, all excited or something. I
am thinking of growing a few strawberries this spring too.Last summer I
grew a row of sunflowers on one side of my tiny veg garden. I got the
seeds from the supermarket for 12 cents. They got to be 12 feet also, and
I let pole beans grow up them, and it was great. we got tons of sunflower
seeds, which we shared with the birds. I may grow them again, as they
attracted a lot of attention in my neighborhood, where nobody grows
anything except chemically dependent grass, and the same old shrubs.
There are people who are opposed to the execution of even the most
heartless of murderers. They hold candle light vigils outside the place
where they are going to get executed, and try everything to keep killers
who didn't think twice about committing some awful act against humanity
alive. So, yes. The thing the animal people were going on about the most
is that the woodchuck was just doing naturally what it should be doing, and
that the people were intruding on its territory. Other people accused
them of being selfish, and not sharing their harvest with the poor little
woodchuck. (I guess they never saw a woodchuck's concept of sharing: I eat
everything, you get nuttin".) I'm glad that I didn't have to see what your
dog did to the varmint, though, because it sounds GROSS! don't forget, I'm
from the city, and then suburbs, so I am queasy about this stuff.
Oh, Sheila! Corn smut?! That's why that guy wanted to get away from
this list so fast - he didn't want to hear about such prurient topics as
"corn smut!" Anyway, I am not sure, but I think that one of the other
numbers on the fertilizer is the thing that needs to be boosted for root
crops. Is it potassium or something else that you have to boost? I only
pay attention to these things if I see a problem developing.
I think we are all suffering from that condition where you get depressed
from being in the dark too long. We have been in a deep fog for the
better part of the week! At least it is really warm, though, (60F), so our
heating bills should be good. On the other hand, you always have to put on
a light, even in the middle of the day, so it all evens out.
