NYBG is the New York Botanical Gardens, in the Bronx, NY.I was in this
program in the sixties. It was great. They have a new program now, (the
old enclosure is now under a parking lot), and it is nowhere as good as the
old one. They added a lot of interesting stuff, but everything is done on
these communal plots, and I think that you lose something when it is done
this way. Also, the program is broken down into a few "semesters," so
there is no continuity. As a ghetto kid, I thought it was absolutely THE
most wonderful thing to have, albeit just for the growing season, your OWN
piece of land that you only had to share with one other person. And
hopefully that person would want to work as hard as you to get the prize at
the end. I have seen again and again, that communism, known today as
"cooperative learning," in educational systems, does not work, so I'm sorry
that they are using it in this formerly cool program. It was and still is
called the Gardencraft Program. It is VERY expensive now, so my poor kids
will have to learn from me. They made a movie about it, but there is only
one copy left and they have it in some kind of refrigerator vault, and
won't show it. I wanted my kids to see it, but they said, sorry, no way.
Oh, the other thing: if you are ordering seeds from Pinetree, or other
places up there, have patience. You may have heard on the news about the
ice storms that left lots of people with no electricity? Well, at
Pinetree, (I had called to place my order) they are trying to fill the
orders, but they are doing it by candle light! So, it may take a little
extra time. I sent out all my orders, and am waiting for the seeds to
come! I ordered also from Le Jardin du Gourmet, from Vermont. Has anybody
ordered from there before? (Fine time for me to be asking).
I can see the sun is starting to move back to the right, so that means that
spring can't be too far away!!!!! -Lauren B. Z6 NY
