I should think you'd be wise not to leave last year's crop to grow next
season for 3 reasons:

1.  If you grow potatoes in the same place then you'll experience a
buildup of disease.

2.  Last year's crop consumed the available nutrients most suitable for
potatoes.  This year's crop would suffer from the deficiency.

3.  You'll get 10 or more plants from the tubers left in the ground at
each spot that you grew one plant last season.  They would compete with
each other and leave you with a small yield.
