Catherine,

This is not a "chat room" where everyone is looking at what you are
writing. This is a mailing list in which each participant reads email
sent to the list and sends email to the list to be read by others. The
email address of the list is veggie-list@eskimo.com. Duncan McAlpine is
the owner of the list which means he set up the list and provides the
remailing service so that we all get to see each other's mail. (Thanks,
Duncan.)

The advantages of a mailing list are:

1. You can sit down and compose a meaningful message, rather than
sending short comments without punctuation, as is common in a chat room.

2. You can look at your email when you want to, not when the chat room
is active.

3. The mailing list owner (Duncan in this case) can install filters to
keep the garbage (spam) out and he can also disable any member who
breaks the rules of the group. Newsgroups don't have this feature,
although your ISP will often filter out some of the spam.
