My asparagus bed is on heavy, poorly drained soil and tends to be a bit
weedy. I have about 80 plants in three 100' rows. Each plant produces
about five good spears per week at the peak of the season which is
mid-May to late June around here (near Seattle). I can get about one
good meal a week beginning in April, depending on the weather. I tend
to pick the spears a little on the small side.

One interesting way to prepare asparagus spearsis to coat them in olive
oil and lay them in a pan under the broiler. After about 5 minutes they
are cooked and they can be removed from the pan. Sprinkle with sea salt
and balsamic vinegar and serve. This receipe is in the old Roman style.
