Michelle,
I guess some peas may be grown that way, but generally peas and other
legumes grasp the support with tentacles. Beans on the other hand wrap
themselves around a support as they grow. I don't see why it wouldn't work
if the poles have small stems on them for the tentacles to grab as they
grew up. Of course then there are the bush varieties that do not need
much support at all.
