Beans grow up poles because the stem twists round anticlockwise, peas
throw out tendrils which catch on anything going. If you want to grow
tall peas which I do exclusively you will have to use twiggy supports or
provide nets. I grow only tall peas (5-6ft) up nets. I use pairs of
canes set at an angle like 'A' at intervals, tied at 6ft. I then fit
stout horizontal canes between them, holding the top of 6 ft pea
netting. A row of pes grown in modules/pots is planted at the foot of
the netting. Easy to pick, crop over a longer period, heavier yield,
economical with seed.
Varieties Alderman, Gradus, Miracle, Purple-podded, Sugar Snap
(mangetout type, beware of mildew if too dry). You may find others. I
have stopped growing Senator and Achievement/Show perfection.Try your
Heritage Seed sources for other varieties e.g. Magnum Bonum etc., we
don't have these any more.
