RE: vine supports

Michelle,

We have an abundance of volunteer alders that each year yields us a good
crop of saplings about 2 to 3 inches in diameter (at the large end) that we
chop down with the bladed brush cutter. I use these in a teepee arrangement
(three, gathered together at the top with baling wire) in a row down the
bed. Each teepee is close enough to the next that I can lay another sapling
trunk across the top, being supported on each end by a teepee. I run a
string of jute across the bed, attaching it at either end to the outer most
leg of the teepee, about three inches above ground level. Then I tie the
jute to the cross beams, one string for each pea plant, and tie it off at
the lower string. I use the teepees until they rot or snap, then replace
them (using the old ones for firewood). At the end of the growing season,
the jute and spent plants go into the compost bin.

I use a similar arrangement for tomato and bean supports.

Anyway, I don't have room for a huge garden so I have been thinking
about planting vining varieties of as much as I can. Does anyone have
any ideas for cheap supports?
