Re: something digging in my garden, and it's not me

Sounds like moles. Do you get these? They dig up and leave little mounds of soil?

Hi all,
Early spring, I planted sweet peas (seeds) in a pot on my deck. Something dug in the pot, and not a single sweet pea got further than dicot stage.
I have planted cukes, zucchini and tomatoes (plants from the nursery) in the garden, and the next morning, often find the plants dug out and scattered. I put my German shepherd on the deck, hoping that she would bark at a raccoon and chase it off, but no barking.
Yet the digging continues. Often holes are started, but they get no further than a few inches, and if no root ball of veggie is detected, another hole is begun. Last evening I put in three tomato plants; this morning two of the three were dug out. Zukes, cukes, and tomatoes that are established are not bothered. And The Thing does not eat what it pulls out, only digs, uproots, and moves on. It may be looking for more sweet peas.
I suspect chipmunks, but raccoons or squirrels are also a possiblity, and my husband has suggested skunks. I have not noticed any tracks, but will be looking for them from now on.
If anyone has an idea of what this critter might be, I'd like to know...it would be nice to get a little produce from my garden, and so far, ZIP!
