We built a cold frame several years ago with straw bales and heat coils in the ground. As fall approaches we start mostly salad greens, but have tried all sorts of vegetables which last into early December if we are careful (Cincinnati 5/6). Carrots work especially well, tomatos are too tall. We cover the straw bales with 4 mil plastic at night and all day when it gets colder. It was very inexpensive, 5 or 6 bales @ $3 - $4 each + a roll of plastic. Since the ground is still warm in the fall, we only use the heat coils in the spring to get a jump start on the season.
