big shallots?

Has anyone had any success growing big shallots. I can grow lots of tiny
ones but I hate peeling them. How do they get them so big at the store?
I've tried 1) planting big ones, 2) giving more space, fertilizer, but
nothing works consistently. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks Judy Warner
