My "Seed to Seed" book by Suzanne Ashworth tells how to hand
pollinate melons. she describes the Armenian cucumber, although grown and
used like a cucumber it is botanically a melon and will cross with all
other varieties of C. melo, regardless of group.
I can type it out for you if you are really interested. It is kind of
long. And she says hand-pollination is even less effective than insect
pollination and that even the insect pollinated plants abort 80% of the
female blossoms.
Glad I'm not growing cucumbers.
