Thanks for all the advice about plastic and the cold frame. Does glass
keep warmth in then? As far as I remember my cold frame had sliding
panels so ventilation was possible. I'd love a poly tunnel but I'm not
convinced that a suburban patch is the place for them.
I had a rampant patch of raddichio and chard seedlings this time last
year and eventually got to plant them out as I harvested my early
potatoes. The raddichio looked very green and tasted revolting until the
first frosts, when it started hearting up and turned that lovely red
colour. And we kept eating it, pulling leaves off, until April. Then I
had to move it to make room for the parsnips so I planted a couple of
plants in the flower beds. It is flowering now, really lovely pale blue
flowers which open with the sun. I'd like to collect the seed if I can.
Beetroot leaves seem to be a reasonable substitute in the summer, for
colour anyway.
