Re: Wrong Address

It sounds like you are doing great, Rena! The best suggestion I can make to
any PAR unit is to become friends with the local food bank--hopefully a
regional one that is an affiliate of America's Second Harvest. Not only
will they take all your donations, but they will supply a list of potential
volunteers, supply labor and transportation when needed and plug you into
the charity network within your community.

Don't forget commercial growers in your area, too. The $1.48 a pound
IRS-approved charitable donation deduction is a powerful tool in soliciting
from orchards and truck farms. Ask that they donate what is left after a
farmer's market day, too. If a field of corn, for example, or an apple
orchard needs to be picked, rely upon the food bank for labor. They usually
have government-paid summer interns that are young and strong--perfect for
gleaning a corn field, for example. Also, the food bank will know of other
organizations that do service projects and will be glad to pick apples or
beans. These kinds of donations go a long way in feeding the hungry and
adding to your PAR unit's collection totals.

Also, don't be a shy violet about publicity. Go to local TV and radio
stations and ask to speak to the assignment editor. Explain your project
and tell them about an upcoming event that is worthy of covering. Remember
that film footage needs to be colorful and with action. Kids planting a
hunger garden, home gardeners bringing in baskets of tomatoes and
squash--both make good subjects for TV. Hope some of this helps.
