The easiest way to harvest asparagus spears is to snap them off at the soil
line using your fingers. You can use a knife but be really careful not to
cut too deep into the soil. It's possible to damage the crowns under the
soil if you dig around with a knife.
Remember to only harvest spears that are about as thick as your thumb. Once
they start getting thinner, it's best to leave these to fern out so that
they can feed the roots.
