Subject: Prototype pyramid
Saturday was a beautiful day, so I decided the prototype pyramid has done
it's job and proven the concept of keeping seedlings from freezing
overnight down to about 2 degrees F. I took the Christmas tree bulb out
of the pyramid to see how the seedling would do overnight with no heat.
The overnight low Saturday night only got down to 34 degrees F. (2
degrees above freezing). I never checked to see what the temperature was
early Sunday morning. The 2 little seedlings in the little peat pot were
still alive.
Last night there was a frost. Enough that the frost on the
windshields of my cars would not come off with just the windshield wiper
blades. I had to scrape it off. There was frost on the Saran Wrap
window of the pyramid. When I lifted the pyramid I found the 2 little
seedlings were still alive! That surprised me. I won't find out how
cold it got last night until tomorrow.
My garden is still a little too wet to get into, but as soon as I
can, I will finish the pyramids and put everything in place and write a
report as to what exactly I did. I wanted to put seed in the ground
eight weeks before I normally feel safe to do so. Well, better late
than never.
Stan. The cheap and lazy gardener.
P.S. I just bought one bale of "certified seed free" straw for $4.25.
Is that a fair price? It was only $.25 more than regular straw. This
will be for the potato project.
