Well, Teresa, to answer your question------I have no idea.
     I have more fun trying out new things than actually growing good
crops conventionally.  Most of my ideas fail.  But I do have fun trying.
     I have relieved great help from this list and the consensus is that
the potatoes will grow in straw very well plus if you continually try to
bury the base of the plants with straw as they grow, they will develop
more root systems and more potatoes. 
     I added the idea of the weed mat to try to keep the roots from going
into the ground and thus making it more difficult to harvest. Heck, it
may kill them.  We'll find out.  Also, I figure that any weeds that grow
in the straw will be very easy to pull since they won't really have
anything to grab their roots onto.  
     Try it with me.  Use a small area.  What have you got to loose?  We
can compare results as we progress throughout the summer.  (That is, if I
am allowed to stay on the list that long. :)
