hi karen!
in my experience i have found that onions are pretty resilient. i would
just poke a little hole in the soil and gently push the roots in. i
transplanted some shallots that had wintered over(and supposedly were
plowed under) to my grandson's section of our garden and they came up
just fine. mind you, these were mostly laying on their side when i
found them and i really did not think that they would survive.
