Hi, Duncan!
Tomato...I grow it every year, and always am pleased with at least some of
the varieties...once I grew a tomato (Beefsteak) that was over five pounds,
and it, and a few of its lesser fellows were EXCELLENT cored, then drizzled
with a little olive oil, a sprinkling of minced garlic, a little basil, and
fresh bread crumbs, baked at 400 degrees 'til lightly browned and
sizzling!!! Serve with crunchy bread, cheese (goat?) and a cold drink for an
wonderful summer lunch! So here's how I'd vote, according to success in my
garden:
Tomato
Zucchini
Asparagus
Potato
Carrots (we have horses)
Peas/pods
Beans
Corn...difficult here because of raccoons, the thieves!
Sorry, couldn't stop at 5, but these are in order, so my top 5 are the first
five.
A tomato may be a fruit because it has seeds...but then what about corn,
peas and beans, cukes, the squashes...?
Here's what my abridged dictionary says: any plant that is eaten
whole or in part, raw or cooked, generally with an entree or in a salad, but
not for dessert, as the tomato, potato, lettuce, cucumber, cabbage, etc.
