Garden Uses for Pine Cones?

Has anybody ever tried composting pine cones? I wonder how long they'd
take to break down. Has anybody used them for mulch? Around what kinds
of plants? I can picture them making salad out of lettuce.
Also, any internet gurus there who can tell me why I can't post to this
list from my regular address with a local ISP? No other list I post to
seems to mind it.
The "listmaster" address given on this list's web page just returns my
mail, and I assume the request-address we use to sign up is strictly
automated.
