Hi Dawn,
I'm in Zone 7, and the dates here for planting peas are March 15 to May 1.
Since you are further north in Zone 6, you certainly should still be able
to plant peas. In what part of Zone 6 are you?
This year I planted my peas late March. Last year I planted peas for the
first time and was much later planting because the garden wasn't ready on
time, and when I finally did I lost the first seeds to too much rain. So I
did a second planting -- I can't seem to find that calendar just now, but
it was already quite warm. I harvested in mid- to late June. Then it got
just to hot here, and the plants gave up. We did enjoy enough pease for a
couple of meals.
Last year I planted only petit pois; this year I've planted petit pois and
sweet peas.
As for how many plants per person, I would be interested to know what other
people think. I have an old Maryland guide (1970's for the guide -- I don't
know how old the information is) that says for peas you should plant 60
feet of row per person! I have a mere two dozen plants or so for the two of
us. I'll let you know how that works -- I really can't go by last year,
since I started late, and the weather was quite different. And peas are
still in the experimental stage at my house. (I'm surprised that last year
they survived the rabbits and the deer -- beans are a magnet for them here,
so I've given up on them.)
Let us know how it works out!
Pat
