If you have a problem with too much wetness, try raising the bed you plant
the peas in. I had a very wet plot early on this year so I shoveled out the
paths between the rows and ran the dirt through a 1/4 inch wire screen.
the rocks I put back in the path and the dirt I used to raise each bed
several inches above the now lowered paths. Worked great. Then we had a
drought so I've been watering with a hose Anyway the peas all came up and
are doing fine. I plant rows in succession, about a week apart just as soon
as I can work the soil. If any don't make it, I just replant that row a few
weeks later. (Massachusetts).
I've also put some lettuce and carrot seeds in between the double rows of
peas. The lettuce didn't all come up and neither did the carrots. Maybe I
should have been more generous with the seed. Meanwhile, I had spilled some
lettuce seed in another part of the garden and that all came up and is
crowding out the weeds. Hmmm. Has anyone tried lettuce as a cover crop or
is that just a good way to breed snails?
