The subject of lettuce has been clogging the email
system. This is a pretty simple, easy to grow plant. They get bitter
when they're old and starting to bolt (which means they put up stems with
flowers and seeds). I cut my lettuce about a half inch above the
crown. It keeps producing leaves all through the growing season. If
it gets bitter, pull it and start over.
If you sow new seed every couple of
weeks, you can get new lettuce all through the summer. Most varieties
don't like the heat but there are a couple already named that do ok.
Trust me, unless you eat lettuce 24/7 you will be
able to indulge your lettuce hunger to your heart's content with one good
row. I planted three varieties last year and was delighted with them
all. Mesculun mix, Simpson's black seeded and buttercrunch. Loved
them all.
I let some of my lettuce go to seed for the birds
which absolutely loved the feast.
