The soil splashing up on them seems to help spread it faster. That's why I use black plastic around them (or some yrs mulch). My garden is 'back behind the shed' and the water pressure isn't too great once hoses are run the long distance so overhead sprinklers don't work as well for me as flat hoses do. nancy
