Re: Watering

Reading various comments on "soaker' hoses someone out there might find
useful the inexpensive watering system I rigged up for my outdoor garden.
I decided to go with a low-pressure drip-hose method. We're on a well so
to avoid frequent cycling on and off of the well pump I mounted two 45
gallon (Imp) drums 12 feet above ground level, rather than use a pressure
regulator. The garden is divided into three zones, controlled by hand
valves. A timer regulates filling the tanks. The flat plastic hose with
pin holes is quite inexpensive and lasts for several years if a filter is
used on the outlet from the tanks. Header hose connection don't even have
to be clamped because the pressure is very low. This year I will make four
zones instead of three because the volume in one zone is a little too
large, the volume in the hoses too great for efficient operation. I've
never measured the pressure of volume, just fly by the seat of my pants
using trial and error - after many years of gardening there is an
accumulation of a lot of error.
