We like to interplant herbs among the vegetables. Many perennial herbs
are grown here as annuals and planted in October with the cool season
vegetables, then the warm season vegetables planted among the herbs in
March after the cool season vegetable harvest. Most will make it
through mid June before succumbing to the heat. We don't plant
sunflowers among the vegetables because of their reputation for
retarding growth of adjacent plants but we also interpalnt marigolds and
nasturtions although the extension service tells us there is no evidence
they will protect the veggies from nematodes.
