Re: Wood Bees

Dave Green,

Thank you again. People had better wake up and realize that without insect
pollinators we are in serious trouble for food. Here on Vancouver Island a
couple of years ago someone brought bees infested with mites from the
mainland. We now face the possible near extinction of our honeybees and
everyone (at least those conscious of how important pollinators are) is
doing what they can to encourage our native solitary bees who will escape
the mite infestation.

Just yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of finding a swarm of bees
(from ome of my two hives I keep just for pollination) on a Victoria plum
tree. Though I'm a real amateur I managed to get them into a hive and this
morning they are set up and ready to go to work near the vegetable garden
and greenhouse (although for the moment I think they will be spending most
of their time on the Scotch broom growing wild around here).

Can you suggest a good book, or books, on the pollination of plants?
especially fruit and vegetable plants? In the meantime I, for one, very
much enjoy the information you're providing. Keep it up.
