While there are benefits to living in a relatively frost free coastal
environment, specifically the avocado belt in the low coastal foothills of so
calif, there are some drawbacks. While I may be able to garden some things
year round, such as lettuce, all manner of greens, peas, coles, beets,
onions, potatoes, and it is certainly fun, it also means there is no down
time. No rest for the weary. There is always something to do. And the weeds
this year are incredible -- theyve been growing full blast since last november
and the first rains. My compost piles are groaning, and so am I.
There are also very few reference books dealing with this particular
environment. Even the few books that include so calif dont quite fit my area.
And the terms 'date of first and last frost' are totally meaningless.
It also means there are some things that are difficult to grow. I cannot grow
most fruit trees. Apricots and plums are out. There are no satisfactory low
chill ones that I have tried. As are most of the good varieties of peaches,
nectarines, etc. And cherries, totally out. But we can have citrus and
many tropicals.
Melons are if-y -- even the short season ones. It has to be a good hot year.
Without much coastal fog or low clouds. And this year thanks to persistent el
nino clouds and rain, most warm loving plants are up to a month behind. My
blackberries which were almost finished at this time last year have not even
begun. The first ones are barely even pinkish on their green ends.
But its not all bad living in this hell hole. Gotta run, I'm late for my
tennis game.
Janet.
