A tractor trailer load of bees, headed for Maine blueberry farms for
pollination wrecked enroute, and the bees were all lost. Details of this
terrible accident can be seen at:
http://www.portland.com/monews/story1.shtml The link should be good
for the rest of this week.
Most of America's commercial fruit and vegetable farmers rely on the 1500
commercial beekeepers left in the US for their pollination needs. These
beekeepers are increasingly migratory, making more intensive use of a lot
fewer bees than there were in Grandpa's day.
This load was moving from Florida to Maine, and had almost reached their
destination, when the wreck occurred. Maine requires 50,000 hives of bees
each year for blueberries, with most coming from out of state.
