care of garden tool handles

Hi all,

I recently acquired some older garden tools -- shovel,  pitch fork,  hoe,
etc.  These are fairly old with long wooden handles that, while sound,  are a
bit rough to the touch.  What is the best treatment for these to make them
more comfortable to use with bare hands?  Sanding and rubbing with some sort
of oil?  If so,  what kind of oil would you suggest?
