That's blossom end rot. If the plants go through periods of insufficient
water at the roots it results in a calcium deficiency which causes this.
It is common with plants in small containers and especially with
soilless composts. Use a soil based compost and water more frequently in
hot weather. Ring culture or growing in soil beds would also help.
