Knowing when melons are ripe

I have watermelons and Jenny Linds on vines and am wondering how I can tell for sure if they're ripe.
How are your gardens doing? Here in Singapore we're doing great. My Yellow Pear tomato is producing abundantly, so are the Lima beans , other beans,okra and pumpkins are growing fast on the vine.
