Just got done thumbing through Territorial's winter catalog--I agree, it is
a winner, and an inspiration. I'm in Zone 9 in Berkeley, CA (sunset zone
17 I think). Just planted leeks and scallions, direct seeded into my small
garden. The leeks will get transplanted in a month or two and I should be
able to harvest them in the spring. It's my third winter here coming up
and I'm still experimenting with what grows best. I've got tiny broccoli
seed starts from a couple weeks back--I think I should've started them a
wee bit earlier. Last year I had broccoli for Thanksgiving, if the weather
holds I hope to have some this year for Christmas. I've got a row of
carrots which'll do for a December harvest I'm hoping. I tried fall peas
but had too many problems with mildew and aphids. Peas do great for me if
I plant around February I just about have them for Easter.
Kale/collards/lettuces/salad greens will all do well if planted now direct
seeded or with transplants. Experiment with cool season crops and see what
works best--if you're starting cole crops now you might do best buying
healthy transplants if you can find them around.
Have fun.
