In my opinion pumpkins and gourds would be a higher water content than
most other crops you could grow. Better to grow sunflowers or corn for
a dual purpose crop, even ornamental maize (keep away from the edible
variety), there is a lot of fibre in the plant and in the root of any of
these, or if it is just for green manure grazing rye is good. If economy
is your aim better to sell the crop and use the money to buy whatever
pot system you fancy. There are still plenty of people with more money
than sense e.g. will buy a pumpkin, cut holes in it then throw it away,
they might even pay you to take it away if it is going rotten.
