Re: Transplanting lettuce

Hi,

Since you say you are about to start your lettuce, I imagine you are
talking about seedlings?
I have successfully transplanted lettuce, but probably at lower temps. One
tip is to transplant them in the late afternoon when the sun has already
gone down a bit. Then the plants will have the dark of night to rest.
You'll probably have to water them frequently until they get their roots
settled in. If you have the possibility of at least partially shading them,
that would be ideal. Transplanting lettuce larger than seedlings can be a
bit tricky, especially in the heat. If you are digging them up from the
garden, you have to be sure to take enough earth along with them so that
the roots are not disturbed.

What kind of lettuce are you growing? I'm curious because in July and
August when it gets quite hot here (upwards of 85 degrees -- 90's and even
up to 100) I usually can't grow lettuce any longer with my garden in full
sun. This year I had some italian lettuce that did very well in the heat. A
friend gave me the seeds. Sorry, I don't know the variety, but I will ask
since it did so well here. I also manage some arugula and endive during the
hot months. Most lettuces, though, bolt very quickly in the heat. I would
appreciate some suggestions of summer varieties for next year.

Since the middle of August, I've been sowing seed for lettuce for the fall
-- a little each week -- and the seedlings are doing very nicely now.
