* More than 20 homeowners on Cape Cod have reported thefts of
hydrangeas this summer. The Dennis, Mass., police dept. reports the
thefts are a concerted effort to harvest the best flowers for financial
gains. Authorities believe the blue flowers are being sold at wholesale
markets in N.Y. and Pa. Cut flowers sell for $12-$15 at florist shops
and some plants produce hundreds of blooms. Thieves have been
selective, choosing plants that grow in acid soil and produce blue
flowers. Source: Cape Cod Times. http://www.capecodonline.com

* Etera Networks will license NeoFlora, a gardening database
developed by NeoInformatics. NeoFlora reportedly houses the most
extensive knowledge on the gardening industry in a patent-pending,
interactive format that is expandable. The database, which contains
information on more than 38,000 plants and reportedly is 6 times
bigger than the next largest gardening resource, will be integrated into
Etera's Web site, which serves more than 1,000 independent garden
retailers. http://www.etera.com

* Here's a useful tool, especially if you ship out of state: Univ. of
Mont. and USDA-ARS created the Invaders Database System, a Web
site where growers can find what plants are listed as noxious weeds in
each of the lower 48 states and 6 Canadian provinces. Users can browse
an entire state's list or enter a plant name to find what states list it as
noxious. http://invader.dbs.umt.edu/Noxious_Weeds/
