Some time ago there was correspondence concerning cucumbers and County
Fair was mentioned. I could find no reference to it.
I have come across the information below which I think answers the
original question.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:
Several years ago I ordered County Fair cucumbers from your company.
I found this variety
to be the best pickler I have ever grown. Your claim that cucumber
beetles didn't bother this
variety led me to order them. This claim proved to be accurate as
I have never seen a
cucumber beetle on them. It also proved to be a good producer of
high quality picklers.
I have searched in vain (even on the net) to find this variety and
have tried several different
varieties, none of which I cared for, since then. Could you tell me
why this variety has been
dropped and is there another cucumber that would provide the same
benefits as County
Fair?
A:
The County Fair cucumber was the result of a very complicated
cross-breeding program.
The suppliers failed to keep the seed line pure and have been
unable to reproduce it exactly.
The best pickling variety that we offer which is bitterfree and
doesn't attract beetles is Little
Leaf. Other slicing cucumbers that are not bothered by beetles
include Sweet Success, Sweet
Slice, Park's All Season Burpless, and Park's Bush Whopper II Hybrid.
