Acorn Squash and Squirrels

I wanted to ask this while the season was fresh in everyone's mind, for
next years planning.  I am an urban gardener, and considering the lack
of rain we experienced, I had a pretty good harvest of Acorn Squash.
However, it appears the squirrels have taken a bite of each one.  I was
wondering if anyone had successfully kept these critters from sampling
theirs?  I honestly don't mind the tomatoes being picked at because
there are usually plenty to go around - but not my precious squash!
