RE: Chitalpsis

I have tried Chitalpa. It is significantly less hardy than Catalpa. Plant
in a hot sunny location to encourage it to harden off. It has not been
hardy for me so far. It will flower very young. A plant from a one gallon
pot flowered during it's first year. I have planted the other parent,
Chillopsis, last year and again it flowered the first year from a one
gallon pot. Burgundy flowers! I planted it in a pile of rocks in a hot
spot in the garden. I believe it has survived it's first winter with some
die back. It was wrapped in some white cloth to protect from wind and
dampness. We will see whether it will flower after moderate winter
injury.

Does anyone on the list grow Chitalpsis (a bigeneric cross between
Catalpa and Chilopsis)? At what age does this tree/shrub flower?
