Re: Monkey tree??

Until I got to the part about the bark being furry, it sounded like you were
describing Ailanthus (tree of heaven), an obnoxious weed tree. I have a
cleared area at the end of my property where we have thinned out many trees to
let in some light to plant some other things. This spring, I took down a large
Ailanthus. There are numerous formal beds 50-100 feet away from where this
tree was growing and Ailanthus has been coming up in all of them. Some appear to
be seedlings, but others seem to be suckers. The cutting down of the parent
tree certain triggered a flurry of growth here. I probably pull up 50 a day.

Ailanthus does resemble sumac, blooms in the spring, and can turn red. It is
an extremely fast-growing weed tree.

They put out runners just below the soil surface and she has
suckers all over which she is willing to "part with." The leaves are finely
textured and make me think initially of sumac. They are long and narrow and
give
the appearance of being "layered." She said it turns red in the fall and is
supposed to bloom in the spring altho hers hasn't yet. And the fascinating
part
is the trunk is "furry!" Yep, that's right.
