shrubs

Here are some nice bird shrubs that I've used in zone 5b:

Viburnum carlesii, the dwarf Korean spicebush (not very fast
growing, but very fragrant white flowers in spring with pink buds)

Blue holly (be sure to get a boy and a girl; watch for bargains
in early spring or late fall); slow growing, but lovely foliage and nice
berries

Daphne Somerset and the variegated Carol Mackie: be careful
with brittle roots in planting, use good well-drained soil, keep moist
while establishing; they're picky but well worth it and so incredibly
fragrant

Pyrecantha (firethorn): lots of lovely orange berries in fall
and winter for birds, very easy care, several species to choose from

Cotoneaster: lots of great bird berries, very easy care, lots
of species to choose from, including creeping kinds

Euonymous: odd interesting pendant berries and red fall color
on the "burning bush" kinds; nice variegation on other kinds, very easy
care

Weigela: variegated and green types, trumpet shaped flowers may
attract hummingbirds, easy care, not evergreen but fast growing

Elderberry: weedy and can be invasive, but very easy, very fast
growing, not evergreen, birds love the berries (can also be used for
jelly)

Mountain ash or Rowan: small tree with berries bird love

Serviceberry: small tree that takes partial shade; blooms white
in early spring; berries that birds love

Hope this helps,
Susan
